Horses in Grand Central: Nick Cave

29 March 2013

Nick Cave brings his famous Soundsuits to New York’s Grand Central Station, this time the Soundsuits are in the shape of thirty horses through this Sunday, March 31st, 2013.

“When I was inside a suit, you couldn’t tell if I was a woman or man; if I was black, red, green or orange; from Haiti or South Africa, I was no longer Nick. I was a shaman of sorts.” – Nick Cave

The sculptor’s “Soundsuits” are fanciful noisemaking costumes made out of  found objects ranging from raffia, buttons, beads, feathers, flea-market finds, twigs, even human hair.  The horses will graze in Grand Central’s Vanderbilt Hall and shake their tails to a duo of harpists a few times a day.

The installation is part of a series of events celebrating the centennial of Grand Central and this is one surely not to be missed.  Who wants to wait in line with me?

For more on Cave, here’s a great read in The New York Times. Maybe you’re in Denver in June? Visit his upcoming show. You can even buy one of his Soundsuits for yourself.
