Monday Music: Banks

12 August 2013

Since as long as I’ve been applying makeup, I’ve sat crossed legged in front of a floor length mirror with the contents of my cosmetic bag strewn around me. The process hasn’t changed much, just a few product upgrades and age appropriate color palettes.  The thing that hasn’t changed is the element of music that must be played whilst getting ready. During the era of roommates, I’d stick headphones in just to be polite. Now I just drop my Spotify playlist into my little Bose dock and it’s showtime.

A few weeks ago, I was introduced to LA songstress Banks. Just, Banks. (Her first name? last name? Unclear.)  I put her first song on the decks and, just as I was in the last throes of my beauty regimen, “Before I Ever Met You” sauntered into the air and took over.  The BB Cream, blush, eyeshadow, all essentially can be done with my eyes closed but it was the final step where my full attention was needed: the liquid eyeliner.  Bank’s sultry voice and come hither lyrics struck their chords.  I tried to maintain composure, flicking my wrist upward as I slowly painted from inner to outer corner, but I was met midpoint with her piercing lyrics:

“Before I ever met you, I never knew that my heart could love so hard. Before I ever met you, I never knew I would be enemies with disregard. Before I ever met you, I never knew that I liked to be kissed for days. Before I ever met you, I never knew I could be broken in so many ways.”

The eyeliner puddled like ink in the corner of my left eye. It started out so well, and then I was just catapulted into a situation where I knew exactly what Banks was singing.  Most of us have been there, haven’t we?  We thought it was love, until we met the person who really made us fall and fall hard.

“You are my only vice.”

I stood up, a little wobbly from what I just heard and slightly pissed I had to start this process all over again.  I peeled out my contacts, Rohto‘ed and washed my face with much needed icy cold water.  It was an absolute mess, but oh-so-worth-it.  I went back to the drawing board of my floor length mirror and pressed the play button to restart the song again.  Repeat, repeat, repeat.  She now has two more songs to add to my playlist and I am eagerly awaiting her debut EP due “sometime soon.”

Other factors to note slash fall in amore: She’s touring with The Weeknd this Fall (a match made in make-out playlist heaven. ) I mean, have you listened to Kiss Land?! She’s a Daddy’s girl + covers his favorite songs for Father’s Day.  Not to mention, she’s pretty easy on the eyes.  So, keep them on her, she’s certainly one to watch.  Start with the video for Warm Water.

P.S: I love sharing music and would love to hear what you’re into these days as well. So please drop me a line, even if it’s just to say hello!
