Somehow this incredible collabo between the Janelle Monáe + Erykah Badu slipped my “new jam radar.”    If you have already heard the song and find yourself rolling your eyes, saying,  “this is so June’13, well a) you didn’t listen to the lyrics to Q.U.E.E.N. and b) WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL ME ABOUT IT?

The lyrics struck a chord with me, although I will admit, I did have to urban dictionary, “throwing shade.”  To Throw Shade, adjective: To talk trash about a friend or acquaintance, to publicly denounce or disrespect. When throwing shade it’s immediately obvious to on-lookers that the thrower, and not the throwee, is the bitchy, uncool one. Got that? Keep your shade to yourself! Q.U.E.E.N. is full of funk, girl-power and really just about being yourself.

A few of my favorite lyrics:

“Is it peculiar that she twerk in the mirror, and am I weird to dance alone late at night?”

Hands up if you’ve done this? You know who you are.  There’s a video to help you perfect that twerking too.

“Am I a sinner with my skirt on the ground?”

research says no.

and the best lyric of all:

“Even if it makes others uncomfortable, I wanna love who I am.”

The video for the song is equally stunning.  Cameos from China Chow (fashion goddess + host my favorite reality show, Work of Art) and milkshake bringing boys to the yard, Kelis. It’s totally 60’s mod with a fresh injection of Motown funk.   Q.U.E.E.N. is the first single on Janelle Monáe’s upcoming album, The Electric Lady since her debut album  The ArchAndroid (please listen to Tight Rope if you haven’t yet.)  Enjoy:

As much as I do appreciate a monochromatic tuxedo that Janelle Monáe has so perfected, I would love to see her in a little pop of color, those coral lips she wears so easybreezy for Covergirl should meander into her wardrobe.  We could start small, stick with the uniform tuxedo, but say in violet?

You can buy Q.U.E.E.N. here.
