Monday Music: Rosie Lowe “The Right Thing”

13 October 2014

How does the saying go? “If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it was, and always will be yours. If it never returns, it was never yours to begin with.”

Stop the record. What does that even mean? Is it not the laziest thing you’ve ever heard if your entire life? (Please read my rant on fate, here.) I’ve never fully understood the sentiment. It’s a line doled out masking itself as advice when life doesn’t work out the way they imagined.

Rosie Lowe with a beautiful flowering tree plucked from her Instagram account.

The phrase came to me again when I heard this week’s pick for Music Monday here at Ocean Violet. This time the quote is employed as a lesson learned delivered to us through Rosie Lowe‘s lyrics in “The Right Thing.”  Rosie’s voice is a little downtempo R&B and you can almost hear her trembling as she sings, “When things got tough I flew a million miles like a shooting star. I thought I made the right choice,” but goes on to say “I’ve awoke and I am a fool, for letting go.”  The monochromatic video adds to her sullen disposition which makes it equally as compelling as the song itself.

Rosie could easily be sat next to Jessie Ware, FKATwigs or Sade at the next music awards. Her entire EP is quite good, give it a listen here. As well as the remix to this song on SoundCloud which I’ve had on repeat all day:

“If you want something very very badly, let it go free.  If it doesn’t come back to you, hunt it down and kill it.’”
