Monday Music: The xx does Christmas

17 December 2012

Everyone has a favorite Christmas song that evokes nostalgic memories or just get us into the holiday spirit.  Some will argue entire eras as their favorite; classics like Gene Autry, Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby.  But as much as I love a good classic rendition of Silent Night, let me tell you when a great Christmas song cover crosses my path- it heads straight to the top of my playlist rotation.

Last year, I played Bob Dylan’s “It Must be Santa” to the point of exhaustion and of course, Michael Bublé and Mariah Carey will always be ever present.  However, there’s one song I’m quite certain that isn’t on anyone’s favorite list – classic or cover:  Wham!’s “Last Christmas.”

Until now

The xx, took the only whiny, desperate, pull-it-together-girl Christmas song into an actual gem.  Naturally, the UK duo sprinkles their dreamy-whimsical pixie dust all over it to make it my new favorite. Take a listen:

With the first round of holiday parties under my belt (or, errr, uhh flowing over my belt) I finally feel like it’s Christmas. What about you? Any festive tunes that get you in the mood?
