Object of Affection: The Kimono

23 October 2013

It was love at first sight when I saw Carrie Bradshaw in Sex in the City wearing a kimono.  Forget pajama sets, Carrie one upped the trend effortlessly pairing her kimono over a slinky black slip dress and killer pumps.

this was the scene where I fell in love.

This is a yummy one too. "The universe may not always play fair, but at least it's got a hell of a sense of humor." - Carrie Read more at http://www.marieclaire.co.uk/blogs/suzannah-ramsdale/542963/sex-and-the-city-the-best-carrie-bradshaw-quotes.html#jiIemYw5EgfdrXAl.99

I’ve noticed kimono inspired designs on this season’s runway from Etro to Marni and Pucci  all reworking the traditional Japanese styles into more current sophisticated feels. I love the way Etro took the traditional Kimono belt, or the “obi” and added metallic hints and opulent beadwork to make the look more modern.  I’m particularly drawn to the more loose vintage velvet kimonos that stay open in the front creating an almost draped jacket like-effect. It makes for a perfect alternative to the ordinary cashmere wrap and can be dolled up for an evening affair.

Kimono literally means “thing to wear” in Japanese. (Ki “wear” and mono “thing“) They are T-shaped, straight-lined robes worn so the hem falls to the ankle, with attached collars and long, wide sleeves. When you lift up your arms it gives a flirty bat like feel. Traditionally, Kimonos are wrapped around the body, always with the left side over the right and secured by the obi (belt/sash) which is tied at the back.

There are some fabulous vintage finds on Etsy as well as a few designer pieces I’ve rounded up below.  I recently acquired a Renee Lewis Vintage Couture Kimono that I’m been dying to wear over a little black slip dress this Fall.  The next time you want to add a little Carrie Bradshaw or opulence to your look, just look East for inspiration.

everything about this is perfection, also love this one and that one.

everything about this kimono from Red Poppy Vintage is perfection. Would be so divine over this red Alexander Wang slip-dress.

kimonos three ways: traditional, bohemian, bohemian with fringe. Which one are you?
