Paper Cuts

29 January 2014

Today I scheduled a post about scarabs. It’s been tabled for another bug-deserving day.

Arriving in the mail today was an unexpected note from a dear friend. Seeing the handwriting, the ink pools, even a misspelled word crossed out as if a flicker of an autocorrect lightbulb went off; simply put: it made me genuinely, to the core, happy.

So in lieu of an ancient lucky beetle ramble, I’ve decided to write a simple note in the hopes it might enchant you to, you guessed it, write a letter

Tell someone you miss them,  you want to marry them, an apology, or just to say hello. Get out your pen, paper + postmark it. I’ve rounded up a little inspiration to get you in the writing mood.

“A good handwritten letter is a creative act, and not just because it is a visual and tactile pleasure. It is a deliberate act of exposure, a form of vulnerability, because handwriting opens a window on the soul in a way that cyber communication can never do. You savor their arrival and later take care to place them in a box for safe keeping.” – Catherine Fields

“Everyone writes a letter in the virtual image of his own soul. In every other form of speech it is possible to see the writer’s character, but in none so clearly as in the letter.” – Simon Garfield

Ivan Cash decided he was over receiving emails (I feel ya Ivan.) So he enlisted volunteers to handwrite and illustrate people’s emails. The full project is touching: Snail Mail My Email.

+ if you can't say it enough, say it again.

P.S: Keep it a surprise! Don’t ask for your recipient’s address! There’s nothing more magical than an unexpectant piece of parcel. (Even those Amazon.com drunk purchases I make sometimes – guilty, yet still surprised!) Send it to their office, ask a roommate for the address. I trust you’re crafty, witty + resourceful if you’re an Ocean Violet reader.

P.P.S: Thank you.
