Sketchy

8 November 2013

In high school I used a daily planner as intended to schedule assignments, BFF’s birthdays and soccer games.  Of equal importance, this day planner would also be the canvas where I would doodle musings, catalog interesting quotes, affix with scotch tape torn images from Sassy magazine into the blank spaces;  it served not only as an organizer but as an illustrated diary of my year.

Today, everything is housed in another calendar, on my iPhone.  There’s nothing visual about it, just a time, place and 15 minute reminder.  Snooze fest.

Then I was reminded of my notebook love by the Guardian, who clued me into one of my favorite directors, Guillermo del Toro’s hauntingly beautiful sketchbooks.  Here are a few of Guillermo del Toro’s creations from his new book “Cabinet of Curiosities” which is a collection of his notebooks and other obsessions along with a few other famous sketchers.  PS: Have you seen Pans Labyrinth? WHAT?! It’s just my favorite movie of all time. Write it down and rent it this weekend.

I have always been a fan of Moleskins, but I think I’m going to pick up one of a Field Notes (love the graph paper option.) They are a little bit more giving (soft cover instead of hard) and get to sketching. I’ll show you my doodles if you show me yours? Throw a hashtag on it. #oceanviolet

Happy Weekend!
