Smell: Riles and Co.

24 July 2014

I hid the Riles and Co. candle delivery in the utility closet fearing my house guests might come across them.  Little did I know seeing the candles wasn’t the sense I needed to actually worry about! It was smelling them that might give away the surprise of my bridal shower favor gifts.

First, it was my sister  who began inquiring as to why the hallway was the only room in the house that smelled so good. (Compliment or rude? You decide!) Then a bridesmaid looking for the bathroom made a comment to the incredible smells coming out of a hallway closet. I bugged them off with talk of laundry detergent and the use of elbow grease when I clean house.

Luckily the secret stayed safe until the day of the bridal shower when I was able to give my guests the most incredible smelling handmade soy candles from Cristina Plana of Riles and Co. Total hit.

Cristina and I corresponded over email about the language on the candle’s lid.  It was indeed for a bridal shower, but I didn’t want to necessarily say something that my guest’s would feel they couldn’t leave out on the counter either.  Then I was able to choose between lid colors – luxe gold, rustic tin, clean white or polished black. I opted for the minimalist yet glam polished black.

The scent was easy. My go-to-never-fail drink is rosé, so we went with scent No.2 Brut Rosé, which sounds totally girly, but is subtly sweet and sophisticated. Combining notes of strawberry, caramel, fig and bergamot with warm and woody musk, jasmine and vanilla scents. There are plenty other scents to choose from as well: White Tea, Fresh Laundry, Fig Tree and many more to suit your nose. I also got a larger candle for the bedroom in my second favorite scent, lavender which is equally as heavenly.

Working with Cristina was a breeze and supporting small emerging businesses is a no brainer, especially when the product exceeds every expectation you have.  I was also able to give my guests something different than the typical chinese take-out box filled with inedible jordan almonds.

Christina hand pours each candle from her studio in the East Village and stamps it so right on the lid.

Here are a few shots of my candles being made along with the final product!

I thought the same thing about jordan almonds until Eda Kalkay introduced me to Les Cinq Amandes (http://the5almonds.com). Truly addictive!
